ECONOMICS
I am a professor of economics and teach and do research in this field. So, I would like to share some of the things that I find interesting in economics here on this page. This explains the ECON part.
RECYCLING
As an economist I am interested in environmental economics and economics of natural resources, so recycling is part of what I focus on in economics as well.
In addition, here on this page I will also be recycling some of the ideas in economics. Recycling means to “to treat or process (used or waste materials) so as to make suitable for reuse“. I think that what economists study and write about is many times misunderstood or poorly explained for the use more widely. Often economists write research papers to discuss the ideas amongst themselves but far too few of them are actively engaged with the general public. As a result, many of very good ideas and discoveries then go to waste. So, in this sense, it is my hope to recycle some of those ideas here on this pages as well so that they are suitable for reuse.
Recycling also means “to alter or adapt for new use without changing the essential form or nature of“. I am a huge proponent of and actively engaged with Open Education, Open Pedagogy and Open Educational Resources (OER) . Recycling is one of the most fundamental components of Open Educational Resources and the 5 R’s (Reuse, Retain, Revise, Remix, Redistribute). I will be sharing my own teaching material that I create as OER for others to use again. So, clearly, recycling seems to fit here perfectly.
In addition, in my teaching I try to develop as many renewable assignments (as opposed to disposable assignments) as possible. I would like my students’ work to matter and to create assignments that add value to the world beyond simply being something the students have to do to get a grade. The assignments should empower my students to become knowledge creators, rather than just knowledge consumers. So, on this page I will also like to showcase some of the work that my students create.
CYCLING
This one is easy to explain. I simply love to explore the world by bike and do bike touring, so I will use this space to share some of my biking adventures.
